For the last part of Dane's birthday celebration (which I'm still planning to write his birthday post - just running a wee late) we went to the EFRC (exotic feline rescue center) yesterday. The weather was perfect - 80 & sunny. The boys and I went with my mom and Sandy. What a place! They take in cats who have been abused and mistreated or whose owners can no longer take care of them. We heard horror stories that some of these poor cats have endured. They have 200+ exotic large cats. When we got there and were getting out of the car a big truck came past us on the gravel road and went off the road and into a ditch/stream. As he ran back and forth trying to get out, he kept sinking deeper and deeper until the bottom of his truck was sitting on the ground and he was completely sunk. It was like watching a train wreck in slow motion as we all stood there, speechless, as gravel and mud flew. It was an interesting start to the experience. But fortunately they were able to get him out and no damage was done to his truck.
Once we began our tour we saw many unique cats, some which I had never heard of and can't remember the name of them, but we saw cougars and bobcats and tigers and lions. We saw the most tigers I would guess. Shortly after we started someone revved their Harley. Our tour guide was really interested and said that the cats love the vibration of the engine and soon they were ALL roaring back and forth. It was pretty amazing. The roars are so loud they can be heard up to 5 miles away. We will definitely be visiting this amazing cat sanctuary again. These cats are so fortunate they've been rescued and given a loving and safe place to live out their lives.
