Dane Talking
Dane was in a talkative mood so I decided to try and catch some of his words. And of course I couldn't think of anything to ask him to say!!! He says everything - here's a small sampling. I can't believe how well he's talking at 20 months. Will hardly said anything until he turned 2 and then it was like a light switch and he started saying everything overnight - so this is a change.

I got home the other day and was going through some mail when all of a sudden I was stunned with an explosion beside me. There was a giant poof of white. When all settled, and 1/2 of me was completely white, I realized Dane had decided to get out the bisquik, unroll the bag, take aim at me and fling it out the top of the bag. I considered scooping it up in 5 seconds and making pancakes for dinner, but when Rosco started to lick some of it up I decided to just trash it.
Merry Christmas!
We had a great Christmas. Pretty low key this year, which is good because I wasn't really in the mood. Maybe it was the 50 degree weather but I just wasn't feeling it. I didn't put the entire content of our decorations out (only lights and my absolute favorites), didn't break out the Christmas music (until I used it as a last resort to find some motivation to clean and cook on THE DAY of our first Christmas get-together) and only did things when they absolutely needed to get done. Aside from my blah spirit, the boys had a great time. Dane was so much fun this year and was, as usual, a breeze. He loved all the people and the attention. Will was also really good. He made out like a bandit with all of his big tractors. (Santa finally got it right this year and brought him a tractor with a wagon and hay baler - just like he "ordered" for the 2nd year in a row) One of the interesting hits this year were these night lights called SPOKA that I picked up at Ikea. I thought they were so cute and they emit this warm (and surprisingly bright) glow and change their color from blue to white to green. They can be plugged in or run on their own. The boys both love them and Dane has been carrying his around and kissing it.

Here are the cousins (Payton, Will, Landon and Dane) They have so much fun together!

Snowy the Elf joined our household about a month ago. He is our "Elf on a Shelf" who comes to live with us before Christmas. Each night Snowy (named by Will) flies back to the North Pole to report on Will's behavior. He tells Santa whether Will has been naught or nice and, most recently, whether Will ate his dinner or not. While Snowy was with us, he mostly hung out on shelves, in the Christmas tree, in window sills, etc. But these were my two favorites.

Family Feud
My primary motivation for doing this blog is to be able to look back in years to come and remember what we were up to and revisit memories that might have slipped from the forefront of our minds. Things happen EVERY DAY that I think are hilarious or noteworthy and the next day I find myself being that person "oh, the funniest thing happened yesterday...what was that?" These precious years are flying by and I want to document what I can. (Plus, I'm not very good at the boys' baby books so at least we'll have this...)
Having said all that, I'm going to post about something that I normally don't post about, but it's been on my mind quite a bit lately.........to have #3 or not to have #3 (if we would be so blessed)....... I figure in 10 years I might forget just how I was feeling about this and I might wish I could remember.
Last month we had a pregnancy "scare" if you can call it that. I have been 50/50 on whether or not I want another baby. If you ask Luke he would say he 100% does not, but I think really he's at 75/25. :) He thinks about it from a financial perspective, while I think most women think about it from an emotional perspective. He once asked me if I really wanted another one. I told him that I love the boys so. much. that they are so incredible, how could I not want another one.
Part of me longs to have another baby. I went into Buy Buy Baby a couple of weeks ago and I thought to myself that I didn't really need anything from there anymore. And I may never again. That makes me so sad. I loved being pregnant, I loved delivering both boys. I loved having a newborn and I love love love each second of them even more as they grow.
When Will was born our lives changed. I entered not only motherhood, where my every single first thought is "how will that affect Will" but we also entered the stage of Parents of Young Children which means limited Luke and Sarah time, no sleeping in, no relaxing at the beach, the list goes on. There is something to be said for moving forward with our lives now; the end of the most physically demanding portion of the Parents of Young Children stage is in sight. Maybe in a year or 2 we'll be able to go to a restaurant and not be stressed, playing referee, negotiating foods, bribing little people, but maybe enjoy a nice meal. Maybe in a year or two we'll be able to sit on the beach in Michigan and enjoy some adult conversation, maybe even read a book, while the boys play nicely together. Ok, maybe that's all wishful thinking. I know parenthood doesn't go away when the little ones reach 4 but it does get less physically demanding and easier when they can comprehend threats. :)
But there's also the things we would need to consider outside of my emotions. If we had #3 we would have to buy a new car. If we had #3, two of them would have to share a room. If we had #3 and it was a girl, I don't know how I would feel about all of them being downstairs together especially when they're teenagers (fast forward to mixed gender sleep overs...).....with Luke and I so far away upstairs.
During this "scare"... I was going through all of these thoughts and emotions times 1000. I kind of thought, ok, if it's supposed to happen it's going to happen now. I thought it's now or never. This is it. I can put the yes or no, maybe or maybe not thoughts to rest and know for sure whether we'll be a family of 4 or a family of 5. It was monopolizing my mind.
When I realized I'm not, I was a bit sad. I (for a second) mourned the thought of not being able to have another baby. But then I quickly realized how foolish of me to think that has to be now or never. That's not true. I don't even know why I took on that attitude. So moral of the story is who knows. Probably not....but maybe. And as much as I would like to know whether or not we will be 4 or 5 that decision will just have to wait.
All I know is that for now I am absolutely savoring every single moment with Dane. I have since the day he was born. I have been more relaxed, enjoyed it more, taken in everything I can and appreciated all of his moments, as best I can, every day. I am savoring every snuggle, every kiss, every bedtime. I realize Dane may be my last. I realize his "baby" days are quickly coming to an end. He's running and talking. But I still can see glimpses of baby in him when he takes his paci and blanket, when he snuggles up. When he naps in his crib on his tummy with his legs tucked up under him. I love those moments, and not one of them passes without my appreciation for this sweet baby. Both my sweet boys. I'm so grateful.

Do you see this? If you look closely, up near the front (left) side, you will see a small amount of Dane's urine. If you can't see it, I assure you it's there. Most normal people would not post a picture of this nature I realize, nor be excited about something like this. But for the Momma who tried to potty train son #1 for a full 6-8 months, changed poopy diapers for over 3 1/2 years, and nearly lost her mind (and definitely her patience) trying to come up with new motivational material (and punishments) that might work, this is BIG stuff I tell you. Will actually never even sat on this potty chair more than 1 or 2 times. For Dane to willingly sit on it at 20 months, and to actually produce, well, no words. This is cause for celebration!!!!!

My camera is FINALLY working! I've been using my phone for months now. I called Roberts and they suggested cleaning the sensors with a pencil eraser - and viola! I'm so excited. Anyway, I loaded some pics that were already on it and found these two. I thought they were pretty cute - especially the furniture non-slip pad that Dane had stuck to his sleeve that day.

Dear Santa...
Had an interesting bedtime conversation with Will tonight....
Side note: LAST YEAR before Christmas, Will had asked Santa for a tractor. Luke, how dare he, made him this gigantic indoor fort that has a climbing wall, swinging door with a peep hole into a carpeted room big enough to sleep in, play area on top with a look-through to the room, a swinging "dog door" or emergency escape. It's a VERY cool fort. That was what Santa delivered for Will on Christmas morning.
So tonight after I tuck him in - with NO MENTION of Santa I might add...
Me: Alright sweetie, night night. (walking toward door)
Will: Somebody else must have ordered that fort.
Me: What?
Will: Somebody else must have ordered that fort because I ordered something else and Santa brought me a fort. (I sit down on the bed trying hard not to laugh)
Before I can say anything, Will continues...
Will: When we went to that store, is that the real Santa that flies up to the north pole?
Me: Well, I think so..
Will: Well then why did he bring me a fort when I asked for a tractor?
(Here's where I wish I was more witty and had some really cool and smooth answer for him, but unfortunately this was all I had)
Me: Well, I'm not sure sweetie. We'll go find the real Santa this year and ask him to please bring you a tractor, ok?
Will: Ok, because I wanted a tractor.
Part of me gets a little irritated at this, thinking he should be so grateful for what he is given. But then I remember that WE are the ones who set up this little tradition - to sit upon Santa's knee and ask for that special toy. I guess I should have known better. And lesson learned. Don't go above and beyond when dealing with Santa. Bring the child exactly what he asks for! Now we'll have to go and visit Santa quickly this year before he thinks to ask him for a puppy or a new Ranger and be in for 2 straight years of disappointment. And the poor soul who has Will sit upon his knee this year might be in for an earful I'm afraid.

Before we remodeled our house you walked up onto a deck and entered the house on the 2nd level. We changed the location of the front door so it would be at ground level. When they tore down the old deck, we discovered a concrete pad underneath. Unfortunately it was slanted toward the house so when it rained the water ran straight to the house. Not exactly ideal. We knew we were going to have to tear it out but we had been putting it off for a number of reasons. Well, this past Saturday was the day. Luke rented a jack hammer and went to town. He broke up all the concrete and we all worked to load it up and haul it away. Will was very excited for this project! But first we had to get ready.
Work gloves - Check!
Protective eye covering - Check!
Protective ear covering - Check!
Tough Attitude - Check!
He was ready to go.
Getting to work..
Luke let me give it a whirl.

This concrete pad was Will's favorite place to set up a construction site. He loved to get out his tractors and play with them in the dirt that accumulated there. He decided to get one last fix.
Empty- Finally!
...and filled with dirt. Now we'll just have to plant some grass seed and a BIG bush where the brick is discolored. :)

Well, we lost Dane tonight. (not as dramatic as it sounds I guess - he's alive of course) I had gotten preoccupied for a few minutes in the kitchen when Will came in and then ran to the garage. I wondered what he was doing, asked him, and he replied that Dane was in the garage! I thought, no way! Why would Dane be in the garage. As I began to run toward the garage my mind immediately started racing: Was Dane in the garage? When was the last time I'd seen him!? I think it was only a few minutes - how had he slipped into the garage without me knowing!? Was he ok? I heard a strange noise and my panic started to set in....he was in the garage!! Had he gotten in to anything!? Oh my lord please let him be ok. I got to the garage and didn't see anything - Will said Turn on the light! I flipped on the light and.........no Dane. What in the world! Where was he? We turned around and began searching and calling for him. We had heard him, but I couldn't find him. I knew he had to be somewhere nearby. So after what was probably 20 seconds but felt like 10 minutes I opened the pantry and there was Dane, smiling. He was standing perfectly still in the pitch black pantry.
Thanks, Dane, for the heart attack. He thought it was hilarious.

We went to Michigan for Thanksgiving with my mom and Chuck. We had a good time - not too many pictures since we just relaxed most of the time. Here are Dane and Grandpa Chut helping prepare the feast - breaking up the bread for the stuffing.
Will loves to play hide and seek. He used to say he wanted to play, go and hide and then when you got close to him he would start laughing and hop out. We tried to explain the basics to him and he's gotten much better! He wanted to play while we were up there and he went to hide. This is what we found.... he had attached this sheet to the top bunk and hid in this cocoon-like thing!

Decorating for Christmas
Tonight we put out our first decorations for Christmas - Dane came out to help with the festivities.

Our trip to Arizona was a success. And by success I mean we made it there alive and made it home alive. Overall I will choose to hold close the memories of us having fun, playing in the sun, enjoying the beautiful landscapes, taking the boys to new places and visiting with family and friends. We had so much fun. It was great to visit with Grandma Becca - the boys had a blast. Dane quickly got into the habit of calling for "Becca Becca" when he woke up and pretty much all day. They made a construction zone in the back yard between the rocks. It was too cold for the pool but we all enjoyed the hot tub. We saw a bobcat right outside Rebecca's fence, heard coyotes and saw 2. We got to meet a number of her friends that we've heard so much about. We also took a Feng Shui class which was awesome. After a week in Tucson, we moved on to Phoenix. I was so excited to see my Grandma Bonnie and go back to the house I spent so much time at growing up. I immediately felt "home" when we got out of the car in Phoenix. I love it there. I could truly see myself living there.....but that was before I had my family and our "forever" home, of course. ;) We visited with my Grandma Bonnie there, her husband Dell, her daughter Lori and grand-daughter Brooklyn and her son Brent. Also visited with (neice) Kelly and her daughter Emma - all people I haven't seen in ages and who have never met the boys (except GB) I also got to visit with my good friend Amy, who I met when I was in high school on one of my trips out there. We became fast friends and have been close (well, as close as you can be living across the country) for the past 18 years. It was awesome.
Having said all that, it was a pretty difficult trip. After one particularly stressful day when I was near tears, I called my husband who was at home on the couch watching football with his dad, and I wondered who was really on vacation. Please don't get me wrong, I am SO grateful that we were given the opportunity to go out and visit. But darn it, it was HARD. I told Luke I am never, repeat never, going on a vacation without him again (excluding Michigan of course). At least not until Dane is older. I don't know what was going on with Dane, but he screamed half the time we were in Tucson. I think part of it was my own fault - the stress that I put on myself making sure they were "behaving." You know the stress that you take on about things that nobody else really cares about, but you are on high alert the whole time making sure they're not playing with things that they're not supposed to, not being too loud and being polite well behaved all the time. After getting to my Grandma Bonnie's, in about the first 10 minutes I had the place semi-child proofed. I had taken the nice fall decos off the coffee table, moved all the "pretties" up to higher, safer, ground. In the past I have gotten exhausted after one night of visiting at someone else's house, and this was 10 straight days of all of these things combined. The icing on the cake was getting sick the day before we flew home. I couldn't sleep that night prior because of my sore throat. I woke up and had a fever, chills, sore throat and one of those coughs that kind of rolls out because you're so weak you can't even produce a strong one. I ended up in urgent care and the Dr. put me on an antibiotic. I think the stress of not knowing what my state was going to be the next day, the day I had to fly with the boys by myself, which I was already stressed about only added to things. The day for our trip home I felt better, but still was constantly alternating between freezing and sweating. At the airport I was sweating so bad but I couldn't even take off my sweatshirt because my gray t-shirt was SOAKED underneath. Every time I bent over my head pounded and I got dizzy. I was most stressed about getting from the rental car return, putting both car seats into our big duffle bag, then getting the three of us plus our luggage to the airport. It was going all right until the shuttle dropped us and our luggage off at the airport. With no curbside check-in in sight and no luggage carts nearby, I almost lost it. What was I supposed to do? I could not physically lift all of our luggage at the same time plus the pack-n-play. I couldn't just leave it there, plus I had the boys. I found a bench nearby, which I parked the boys on and told them not to move a muscle (I don't think either one of them would have dared) then a bit further down and still in sight of the boys, found the luggage carts. $4 later and some rage at not being able getting the cart free from the contraption quickly enough - I was racing back to the boys and luggage. Just in time for another shuttle full of people and luggage to be dropped off. I made my way upstream through all the people, literally pushing them out of the way in my panic mode of having to get back to my boys. Not. one. person. offered to help me. It reminded me of the time I went to see Straight No Chaser at the IU Auditorium when I was 9 months pregnant. I ended up going in to labor that night, in fact my water had already broken. While we were on the packed-full bus riding back to our car that night I had to stand the whole way, holding on to the bars along the top of the bus. Nobody offered to let me sit down. I refuse to be the lady who needs help, or even expects it, but seriously people! Anyway, once we got our bags checked it was much better. The boys were both extremely good on the flight back. Will was an angel, ANGEL, the whole trip. He could not have been better. I was so proud of him. And when we got to the airport my dad was waiting for us as close as he could get to the gate. He was quite the welcome sight! He later told me that he had explored actually getting a flight out to Phoenix just to help the boys and me get home! One of the sweetest things I've ever heard.
The trip was great, stressful, fun, sad, exhausting and exciting. I'm so glad we were able to go. I'm glad the boys got to see a different part of the country. And I'm so glad that I did it - made it through. Traveled by myself with two small children. Mission Accomplished. Check!

Arizona Adventures
We were down at the horse ranch and hiking around - that beautiful building on the side of the mountain is the entrance to the cave.
A different day Rebecca took us to a bridge that looks like a rattlesnake. The outside has a snake pattern, you can see the entrance down below. And the other end (you can actually see it poking up outside the bridge over Dane's head in this picture) has a rattle that "rattles" when you enter or exit. The boys LOVED it.
This is where Will and I had lunch on our date. :) Nice view!

Yesterday I took the boys to the Reid park zoo. It's a small zoo but really nice and you can get up really close to the animals. We met a girl I went to high school with (and probably haven't seen since) and her husband and two kids. It was a nice outing and the boys loved it. Highlight was getting to watch the mama lion with her 3 baby cubs.

We Made It!
After a very long trip we finally made it to Arizona. I picked up Rebecca and we drove our car to the airport. My dad met us there and took our car and will keep it at his house for us. Check in and security were a breeze. We got to our gate where they said the plane was only about 1/2 full so we could spread out. The boys got to finally open up their new backpacks from nana that they'd been eyeing for days and were filled w new toys and books and play dough and snacks and everything else under the sun. Things were looking good! We got on the plane and Will, Dane and I had our own row and Rebecca had her own right across the aisle. Shortly after takeoff things started going south. Dane fussed and fought sleep the entire time. It felt like most of the time I was walking him up and down the aisle. It was exhausting mentally and physically. Fortunately Will was an angel. When we got to Denver thank goodness our connecting flight was right around the corner plus we saw our bags being loaded on the plane. Which was good since my (large) bag had Danes car seat and wills booster in it and that had caused me a bit of worry. Our next flight was considerably better. We watched a movie and about 45 mins into it Dane finally lost his hard fought battle with the sand man. *cheering*. Plus Rebecca had free drink tickets so I had wine, which was well deserved after our first flight. We got into Tucson at 11:30-1:30 our time- and Will was still awake! He also stayed awake until we got to Rebecca's around midnight and then in bed at 1am (3am our time!). Then he was up at 6 this morning. Joy. Today we went into Tucson- went to the store and picked up a few other things. I've been deliriously tired today and am really looking fwd to a good nights sleep tonight and hopefully a little energy and kids that are well rested tomorrow.

T-2 days!
They boys and I are making a trip to Arizona! Unfortunately Luke can't come because of work, but Will, Dane and I are flying out on Monday night with Luke's mom to Tucson. She has a house in Vail, AZ which is about 30 mins away. We will be there for the week, then rent a car and head up to Phoenix. I spent lots of time in Arizona (Phoenix) growing up, staying with my grandparents. I haven't been out there since my Grandpa died, about 8 years ago. I miss it, and I always thought if there was one other place I'd end up (which I sure didn't think it'd be Martinsville! =) I thought it would be Arizona. I'm one of those crazies who love the dry heat. So anyway we will then spend a couple of days in Phoenix with my Grandma and her husband and also my friend Amy (who I met on one of my trips in high school and we became fast friends)
I'm really excited for this opportunity for the boys. Neither one of them have ever been on a plane before and I'm excited to show them the desert, new places and things, and maybe even a coyote! (Will still is part coyote) Plus, I absolutely love flying. I love reading and I love magazines so what is better than being stuck in a seat with nowhere to go and all you can do is one of two things that you really enjoy?
...although I think this flight might be a bit different...
I'm 90% excited and 10% terrified. I'm outnumbered without Luke. Fortunately on the way there we'll be with Rebecca and she will obviously help me. But on the way back it's just me and the boys. One of whom screams for fun. I do care what other people think (maybe to a fault) and I'm so scared they're going to be those kids that people go home and tell their families "yes, my flight was fine but there was this kid who was screaming the WHOLE TIME and............." But I'm trying to get to a good place with my mentality. I will do my best. And beyond that it's out of my control and I just have to leave whatever happens on the plane. I'm prepared though. I have candy, new toys, new mini play-dough packs, a portable dvd player, new movies, snacks......and Benadryl in case of emergency. Wish me luck!

Zoooo
I decided to make a trip to the zoo with the boys this fall, before it gets too cold. I absolutely love going this time of year because most kids are in school so there is barely anyone there. Pamala, Fisher, Will, Dane and I decided to go last week. We had a great time - here are some pics.
Will and his bff Fisher.
Petting the sharks!

Dane was there, I swear. He was just in his stroller and it was a little harder getting his pic.. I actually do have pictures but I can't find them - got a new phone, etc. I"ll have to go look - now. :)

Lovely Stage
I'm not sure what happened. At some point over the last couple of weeks, my sweet little angel Dane has been replaced by a screaming, crying, tantrum throwing, snot bubble blowing, bad-attitude-having toddler. He glares at me and others, hits people and things, throws things and throws himself on the ground. And yes, I have that child. The one who screams. The kind of child that, before I had children, I would roll my eyes at, plug my ears and ask "why is that baby's mom letting it scream like that! Ugh. How annoying." He screams for fun, sometimes looking very proud of himself. I've tried everything - ignoring, sternly telling him "NO Dane! We don't scream" giving him a little pops on the mouth. I've certainly not resorted to locking myself in my closet for a few moments of sweet muffled silence, screaming that I might go crazy if he doesn't stop while on the verge of tears, or indulging in a glass of wine or two. No, definitely not.
I don't know what happened. Looking back I wondered if maybe this change in behavior was directly correlated to the paci weaning. After pondering it for a couple of days I decided that giving my sweet baby back his paci (or is it the paci giving me back my sweet baby - anyway) I decided it was worth a try. So out came the paci right back into Dane's waiting mouth. He quickly picked back up his finely tuned skills of fully operating with paci intact.
I dropped him off at his babysitters this morning - paci in mouth. Chas looked horrified when she opened the door, pointed at Dane asking "what's that!?" Before I could answer she informed me that Dane didn't take a paci at her house and hadn't cried for one in, well, she couldn't even remember when. (she also claims he doesn't scream at her house) hmmm, very interesting. I was *sure* he would be crying for his paci today, probably letting out continuous ear piercing screams until she texted me and admitted she wished she would have kept it. She would see. And nope, she didn't want to keep it on the counter "just in case."
I picked up the little darlings and Dane came running "mommy! mommy!" And the minute he rounded the corner toddling over as fast as he could with outstretched arms he began chanting PACI PACI PACI PACI over and over. Wide-eyed I looked at Chas and said "See! Do you hear what he's saying!" "Yes" she said "he didn't ask for it one time today! Did he, Will?" Will then confirmed with a shake of the head that nope, he hadn't asked for it. I think my little angel might be playing his Momma.
Oh, and all this didn't change his screaming or his tantrums. I guess the moral of the story is that we've entered the terrible twos at 18 months. Woo Hoo.

Word
Will has been asking me in the mornings: "Where will I be going today?" and often in the evenings: "What will I be having for dinner?" I think it's so funny to hear that kind of language come out of my 4 year old's mouth. And because sometimes improper grammar sounds a little like nails on a chalkboard to me, this sounds like music to my ears. We've long joked that Will's accent can vary from the deep south, to Chicago to New York, depending on the day - and now he's adding this.
And speaking of grammar, Dane's vocabulary is literally exploding. It seems like everything I say, he repeats part of it. I won't even list things he's saying because it's so much I wouldn't even know where to start. It is so cute. And the best part about it is that he's beginning to be able to communicate with me. He's known "blanket" and "paci" for a while now, so those two are easy. And a few times when he's been fussy he's brought my drink to me, which gets the point across. But he is beginning to say "milk" (which he doesn't even particularly like) or "juice" when he's thirsty. That's a huge milestone, when he can actually let me know what he wants rather than him cry and me guess. And guess. And guess. One that pushes him further away from being my baby and closer to being a little person. So it's very exciting for Daddy - who very much prefers the little people who can communicate to the babies who make him panic when they cry. :)

I did it. Booooo! After comments about Dane looking like an old man w a comb over coming from everyone, even my own mother who has always been my biggest supporter in my strive to delay the little boy buzz cuts, I went against my better judgment and every mommy bone in my body and trimmed up the back. I admit, it looks better. But now he's not my baby anymore, he's my son who gets haircuts! I know, I'm being a baby myself. But I'll get over it tomorrow, not today. Sniffle sniffle.
